Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Central New York volunteers from the Red Cross are preparing to travel to those areas hardest hit by Sandy.

11 volunteers have been briefed and are leaving on Wednesday afternoon.

The volunteers can be sent to any of nine different state, but most of them are expected to go to the New York City and New Jersey areas.

“The people who are displaced from their homes, many of them need medical attention, mental health counseling…of course they need food and a place to sleep…and comfort,” said Red Cross representative Rosie Taravella.

About 70 others are also ready to leave, but have not received their instructions.

The Red Cross had to cancel approximately 200 blood drives in areas hit by Sandy and donations were already down. To find out where to go to donate blood, click here.
