Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse's fallen firefighters were remembered at a memorial service Friday morning. The ceremony marked the anniversary of the collapse of Collins Block, a fire that claimed the lives of nine firefighters.
45 firefighters have died protecting the people of Syracuse.
Ceremonies where city firefighters, officials and families gather to remember the fallen are intended to remind the community to express gratitude to the firefighters who perished and to be inspired by their selflessness.
Syracuse Fire Chief Mark McLees said Friday, “These heroes were public servants. That's what we do; put the safety and concern of the public above our own needs.”
Sadly, the firefighters honored at the ceremony did not go home to their families. They gave their lives for a noble cause, and their sacrifice is now shared by their parents, wives, children and the city that endures without them.
