Chenango County soldier among dozens hurt at Fort Hood

Afton, Chenango County (WSYR-TV) – NewsChannel 9 has learned Matthew Cooke, a 30-year-old soldier from the Chenango County town of Afton, was one of the dozens shot and hurt Thursday at Fort Hood in Texas.

Matthew’s sister, Christina Cooke, told NewsChannel 9 sister station WIVT the soldier was preparing for deployment to Afghanistan in January. Christina said was shot five times in the abdomen and has multiple organ injuries; however, he is expected to live. 

Matthew Cooke is in the ICU at a Temple, TX hospital.

Cooke is a graduate of Afton Central School.  He has a wife, Sarah and 2 sons, 5 year-old Zachary and 1 year-old Gabriel.

Cooke had been home from Iraq for about a year, the Associated Press reported.
