Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - An old bar with a traditional flavor has been missing in Armory Square since it closed last year. But Clark’s Ale House is returning to downtown Syracuse, and the bar seems sure to get a welcome reception.
The Clark family has confirmed they have signed a lease in Armory Square that begins on the first of September.
“We have a lot of people that stop in that are just walking around downtown and say we're looking for Clark's,” said a former customer who works near Clark's old location. “I feel really bad saying ‘Yah, they're not open right now.’”
But residents won’t be missing their 22 beers and a roast beef sandwich much longer.
“As soon as they open I'll be more than happy to go. Great beer selection!” said another fan.
The father of owner Ray Clark says the family wants to make sure they dot their "I's" in finances and permits before they announce where the new location will be.
“We’re very excited to have Clark’s Ale House back in Armory Square,” said Tony Ortega of the Armory Square Association.
The association says other bars will benefit with more businesses attracting people downtown.
“This is the place to come in Syracuse and there’s plenty of establishments here already,” said Ortega. “Bringing Clark’s Ale House back into that mix is perfect for us. It'll bring that many more people to the Armory.”
The Clark family says they plan to keep the bar just like it was: no TV, no music, but lots of beers. Customers hope it has the same atmosphere.
“Nothing’s changed. It even smells the same - really it's the smell I think,” said a longtime patron.
