Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Neighbors are standing up to save the Van Duyn Nursing Home and Hospital from being privatized. The County Legislature held a public hearing
to help decide whether they should transfer ownership to a different development corporation. The county says it needs to privatize Van Duyn to save money, but some are worried, saying a private owner might make changes to cut corners.
“Everything is privatized these days, but humans shouldn’t be. Van Duyn is a very important facility because it takes everyone,” said Susan Langley, who’s against privatization.
Onondaga County Legislatures say that Van Duyn will run a deficit of $115-million over the next nine years unless it’s sold to a private company.
