Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The Home Energy Assistance Program, or HEAP, is now accepting applications for its cooling assistance program.
And though it may seem like the dog days of summer may never get here, before you know it the heat will be back and we’ll be scrambling to find ways to keep cool. That’s why New York State is accepting applications for cooling assistance now, so it can get air conditioners to people who need them most.
"When you get the really hot days and someone has a medical condition, it’s difficult for them if they don't have a cooling source, so this is a good program,” said Marie Grace, Onondaga County HEAP Coordinator.
The program has a limited amount of money for the program, which is why you shouldn’t wait to apply.
Financially, you must be HEAP eligible and have a medical condition worsened by heat. The program works on a first come, first served basis and there’s only $1.5 million to go around for all of Upstate New York.
"It’s 100 percent federally funded, so that's always a great thing to get that money into our community. We're not using our local tax dollars, so that's a great benefit right there,” Grace continued.
With a maximum benefit of $800 per household, there could be as little as 2,000 units for all of Upstate, so applying now is your best bet.
You can apply at your local HEAP office. If you don’t qualify, you can find air conditioners already in area Lowes stores and online at Home Depot.
