Cooperstown (WSYR-TV) – The home of “Last of the Mohicans” author James Fenimore Cooper will no longer be the home of the Redskins.
The Cooperstown Board of Education voted 6-1 to drop the nickname during a Wednesday night meeting, according to
Oneonta’s The Daily Star newspaper.
Although the district is letting go of the nickname Redskins, which many believe is a derogatory reference to Native Americans, it will retain the orange and black school colors, along with the emblem.
The nickname will officially be retired on June 30.
The
Oneida Indian Nation has offered to replace the district’s jerseys to reflect a new nickname.
In keeping with the traditional association with the legendary author who called the community home, some potential nicknames that have been mentioned include the Deerslayers, the Hawkeyes, and the Pathfinders.
