WALTON, N.Y. (AP) - Police say two bodies have been recovered from a house that burned down in Delaware County after officers heard two gunshots from inside.

State police say officers from the village of Walton Police Department and the county sheriff's office had gone to the home at 2 p.m. Tuesday for a criminal investigation. They heard two gunshots and went inside to find a woman dead on the second floor.

The house was on fire and the officers had to leave because of rapidly spreading flames.

After the blaze was out, investigators found one set of human remains in the debris. A further search on Wednesday turned up a second body in the basement. Both were taken to a Binghamton hospital for identification.

Walton is 120 miles northwest of New York City.
