Madison County (WSYR-TV) -- While you’re out on the roads this weekend, keep an eye out for deer. It’s breeding season, so they’re on the move and sometimes hard to avoid.

So far this year, Madison County has seen an 18 percent jump in car/deer crashes. Since January, the Sheriff’s Office and State Police have been to 533 accidents involving deer.

Deer are most active at dawn and dusk.

Slow down if you see a deer near the shoulder of the road. They often bolt or change direction and never swerve to avoid hitting a deer.
