Cortland (WSYR-TV) -- A museum in Cortland is getting some national attention. The 1890 House Museum is rumored to be haunted and Wednesday night on SyFy’s Ghost Hunters
, the TAPS team, led by Jason Hawes, will investigate.
There’s a lot more to the old home than the spooky stories surrounding it. The home was built by Chester Wickwire, in the late 1800s. The successful industrialist lived at the house with his wife and two children. And rumor has it, they never left – some call them the permanent residents.
Former Museum Coordinator Michelle Grimes says a lot of entertaining and activity happened on the first floor of the house. She says that’s where some people have felt “the energy.”
That “energy” is said to be friendly in nature. Though over the years, people have reported seeing their apparitions, or hearing footsteps and other strange, unexplained noises.
Those stories caught the attention of The Ghost Hunters. The SyFy crew spent a few days investigating possible paranormal activity in the 15,000 square foot home.
Some stories have even been reported in the home’s game room, where people say they hear the clicking of pool balls or men talking - but when they look around, no one is there and there’s no game going on.
And, with or without ghosts, the house does have a spirit of its own.
“It’s unique. It’s interesting. A lot of people are intrigued by that, but the capturing … we’re really excited about this opportunity,” Grimes said.
The museum is open to the public, so you’re welcome to search for spirits yourself. One thing you’re certain to find is a great piece of history.
Ghost Hunters airs Wednesday night at 9 p.m. on the SyFy Channel.
