Tully (WSYR-TV) -- Firefighters from several departments throughout southern Onondaga County responded to a massive fire at the Burger King restaurant on State Route 80 in Tully Wednesday night.

The fire was called in by an employee at around 8 p.m.

A fire official at the scene told NewsChannel 9 that everyone who was inside the building at the time of the fire was able to make it out safely.

Officials say the fire is now under control, but was especially challenging due to the fact that water had to be tanked in and a natural gas line was stuck open, feeding the fire, which made it even more dangerous for firefighters.

For the safety of his crew, Tully Fire Chief Steven Shahan says he had to let the fire burn a little before allowing crew members to go inside.

“The biggest challenge was getting at it while maintaining the safety of firefighters, we did not want them in the roof. There’s two very heavy HVAC units on the roof…that was already burning through the roof by the time we got there, so it really wasn’t safe to do what we normally do, which is to go inside the building, find the fire and put it out,” Shahan said.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire. But officials believe it started somewhere in the kitchen area of the restaurant.
