Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – The Department of Transportation is installing centerline rumble strips in several local roads and says it will improve safety for Central New York's drivers.
Transportation officials believe the new strips will save a lot of lives by keeping drivers in their proper lanes.
“They've been effective in people drifting off the side of the road, so why not provide something that can prevent or at least reduce the number of head-on crashes? The head-on crashes are the tough ones because they cause the most property damage and personal injury,” said New York State Department of Transportation spokesperson Gene Cilento.
The grooves aren’t deep, but they create enough of a sensation to wake people up who might otherwise cross into the opposite lane.
"When you drive over them it sounds like it's a really heavy thud going on, but the actual depth is very shallow,” Cilento said.
They believe that in addition to the rumbling sensation, they make a difference to the driver visually. The grooves create a three dimensional effect as the yellow line appears to be above and below the site line.
Cilento said the strips won’t interfere with snow removal or other road maintenance.
