Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – The yogurt company Dannon is under fire tonight for its use of carmine, also known as bug coloring.
The insects, when crushed, create a vibrant red color used in many foods.
A consumer watchdog group says dozens of consumers have complained that the bug coloring has caused vomiting, hives, and swelling.
Dannon has dismissed the claims, saying carmine is safe and FDA approved.
They encourage customers who want to avoid it, to look at the label.
Last year, Starbucks agreed to stop using carmine after complaints from health groups.
