DeWitt (WSYR-TV) - His story has helped to raise awareness for muscular dystrophy all across the country, but not without the help of the students at Jamesville-DeWitt middle school. Friday, Darius Weems went back to J-D to say thank you.
Weems visited J-D in the fall and shared with students his multi-award winning documentary... The kids were so moved, they hand-wrote letters to every middle school in the country, saying they too should invite Darius for a visit.
"This is my second time being here, and another big welcome. It feels good to see the kids so happy about something, to see them happy about my story, being able to have a good impression on them, it feels good when I come to schools and that happens,” said Weems.
There will be a fundraiser Saturday for Darius and his crew. They will be taking on the J-D Middle School staff in wheelchair basketball from 5 until 8 at the middle school. It costs $5 per person, and $10 per family.
So far, his school campaign alone has raised more than $100 thousand for research.
