Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Sentencing for a Cicero man who pleaded guilty to charges in a heinous rape, murder in Clay has been delayed while Federal authorities examine the possibility of pursuing the death penalty.
David Renz will spend the rest of his life behind bars according to his plea agreement, which included admitting that he murdered Liverpool Central School District librarian Lori Bresnahan and also raped a young girl who was with her.
Accused of a host of felonies – including rape, kidnapping, and murder – Renz pleaded guilty to murder in the first degree and predatory sexual assault in the first degree.
However, he is permitted to withdraw his plea if prosecutors decide to pursue the death penalty.
Renz was initially scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 1, but was rescheduled for January.
Whether the Department of Justice will consider the death penalty in Renz’s case is ultimately a decision for the Attorney General.
