Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Time is running out for people interested in becoming a New York State Trooper.
Candidates have less than a week to sign up for the trooper exam in October, and the opportunity won’t happen again for at least another four years.
At this time, State Police say that 26,000 people have signed up for the multiple choice test and say that experience is helpful.
"If you're a veteran, you can use 5 points added to your score at any point, whether it's this exam, or next exam or whenever, you can use it once," explained Trooper Jack Keller with the New York State Police.
If candidates pass the exam, they’ll be put on an eligibility list that lasts four years.
If candidates make the list, they may be called to join the academy pending a background check and physical fitness test.
Keller says trooper retirements are making many spots available.
"Normally we get about 150, 200 a year to retire. We're probably three times that at this point," Keller said.
A trooper’s salary starts out at over $50,000 a year and that is just during the academy.
The moment they graduate, their salary jumps to $67,000 a year.
The deadline to apply for the exam is Sunday, September 8 at midnight.
Potential candidates won’t have another chance to take the exam until 2018.
The exams will be given every Saturday in the month of October at various locations across the state.
