Vernon (WSYR-TV) - The death of a colt in the Town of Vernon has been linked to the EEE virus.

According to Oneida County Health Department officials, the horse exhibited symptoms on Sept. 28 and was put down the following day.

Tests performed by the New York State Department of Health confirmed that the horse had EEE.

The death was the first animal fatality in Oneida County attributed to EEE in 2010. The last horse fatality in the county connected to the mosquito-borne virus occurred in 2006.

Other horses have been infected in other Central New York counties including Madison, Onondaga, and Oswego.

New EEE mosquitoes found in Oneida County spray area
Sept. 17

Oneida County (WSYR-TV) - A new pool of EEE infected mosquitoes was found in the western area of Oneida County where the County Health Department sprayed last month.

The new pool is the seventh that has been found in Oneida County since July. According to Director of Environmental Health Dan Gilmore, the number of infected mosquitoes has been reduced, but it is evident that the virus is still circulating among the insects.

Gilmore added, however, that the variety of infected insect found by the County Health Department primarily feeds on birds. “People should keep in mind that the species of mosquito found to be infected with EEE is one that  generally feeds on birds, but should exercise due diligence when outdoor," he said.

The species known to bite humans has been found in other counties in Central New York, and a person in Onondaga County recently died after being infected with EEE.

Oneida County plans another round of EEE spraying
Aug. 28

ROME, NY (WSYR-TV) – Those living in parts of Oneida County need to once again prepare for aerial spraying.  Friday’s planned spraying of mosquitoes with the EEE virus got off to a late start and work was not completed.

Friday night, crews were supposed to star spraying at 6 p.m. but actually started more than an hour later because of windy conditions.  Crews were able to work until nine o'clock when the temperature then got too cool.

Only the Eastern half of the 30,000 acre area was sprayed Friday evening.  Crews will finish spraying the other 15,000 acres in the Western half of the zone Saturday evening.

Spraying is scheduled to start at six and end at nine, weather permitting.  The county recommends that you and your pets stay inside during that time.

Oneida County EEE spraying postponed again

Oneida County (WSYR-TV) - For the second time this week weather conditions have nixed the Oneida County Health Department’s plans to spray 30,000 acres in the western part of the county for mosquitoes infected with EEE.

Spraying is now scheduled for Friday from 6 p.m. until shortly after dark.

The alternate date is Saturday, Aug. 28.

Oneida County EEE spraying postponed
Aug. 24

Oneida County (WSYR-TV) - Due to recent rain throughout Central New York, the Oneida County Health Department has postponed aerial spraying for mosquitoes that might be carrying the EEE virus originally scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 24.

Director of Environmental Health Dan Gilmore said that the new time for spraying will be Thursday, Aug. 26, from 6 p.m. until sunset.

Initially, the department intended to spray roughly 50 square miles around the area in which five pools of mosquitoes carrying the EEE virus were discovered. But such spraying usually requires dry, calm conditions.

Aerial spraying planned for tonight in Oneida County
Aug. 24

Town of Vienna (WSYR-TV) - Aerial spraying is planned in Oneida County to kill off mosquitoes that tested positive for the EEE virus. The spray zone covers roughly 30,000 acres.

This comes after the Oneida County Health Department found 28 mosquitoes that tested positive for EEE in the Town of Vienna.

The spraying is scheduled for Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until sundown, weather permitting.

During the spraying, it's recommended that residents and their pets stay inside.

Bee keepers and organic farmers in the spray area should notify the health department at (315) 798-5064 before the spraying begins on Tuesday.

Approximate area of spraying:

Oswego County has also said that the EEE virus remains a threat. That county sprayed for mosquitoes on the north shore of Onieda Lake, but says their surveillance still suggests the virus is present. The County says any decision regarding additional spraying in that area will depend on the results of continued monitoring and consultation with the state health department.
