Deputies: Woman escapes through window after car becomes submerged
Boonville (WSYR-TV) - The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office says a Lewis County woman escaped through her passenger window when her car flew off the road and became submerged in water.
Deputies say the woman was traveling north on Route 12 in the village of Boonville at about 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday when she fell asleep at the wheel.
Her 1995 BMW convertible struck a sign post at the entrance to Erwin Park and became airborne before skidding across park property according to deputies.
The Sheriff’s Office says her car became airborne again at the banks of the Black River Canal, coming to rest in approximately five feet of water.
Deputies say the woman was able to escape her vehicle through the passenger window and swam to shore, where bystanders helped her.
She was transported to Lewis County General Hospital by ambulance for evaluation.
The vehicle was extricated from the canal and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police and Emergency Spill assisted in the cleaning of fluids that leaked into the waterway.
No tickets were issued according to deputies.
