Syracuse (WSYR-TV) --Destiny USA is being recognized as one of the most eco-friendly businesses in the area.

The mall has taken significant steps to increase cardboard and paper recycling, as well as light bulbs and batteries. Officials say they’ve been able to divert about 39 percent of their waste from landfills to recycling. The real keystone project though, is the compost program and that’s what likely sealed the deal in Destiny earning OCRRA’s Blue Ribbon Recycler of the Year award.

“All of the cooking prep that’s going on in the backrooms, we capture all that waste,” said Destiny USA’s Director of Operations Brandon Munger. “The tenants are given buckets that they dump into a larger toter. The toter’s are taken outside and collected twice a week.”

Munger says Destiny would eventually like to expand the program, even taking it to the point where workers would separate your scrap food from the trash and send that to the compost pile, too.
