Auburn (WSYR-TV) – Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of deadly crashes among young drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers under the age of 20 years old have the highest number of distraction-related fatal crashes.
An international tour is driving the point home today at Cayuga Community College in Auburn.
UNITE's Arrive Alive program uses a high-tech simulator to show the dangers of texting while driving.
During the simulation, the driver sits in a real car outfitted with special sensors. The driver then puts on virtual goggles and attempts to maneuver the roads while sending several text messages to friends.
The simulation enables the participant to see that anything can happen – like driving off the street or crashing.
Organizers say the drivers get one chance in the simulator and then the game is over.
The simulator also shows the dangers of drinking and driving.
Anyone who would like to participate can go to Cayuga Community College on Franklin Street in Auburn until 3 p.m. today.
