Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – It's the ultimate brunch. A breakfast glazed donut stuffed with a cheeseburger lunch is coming to the New York State Fair.

This year, it's all about the Big Kahuna Donut Burger. The new entrée features a quarter-pound burger in between slices of a grilled glazed donut, topped with burger favorites like cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion.

The donut-burger may rival a few interesting menu choices that have appeared over the past few years. Our favorite examples are:

  • The hot beef sundae with beef, mashed potatoes and sour cream topped with a cherry tomato
  • The deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
  • A roasted pig on a spit, and
  • The fan favorite, a mish mash of hamburgers, sausage, hot dogs, eggs, baked beans and macaroni salad known affectionately as a garbage plate

This year's State Fair delicacy features a Central New York favorite donut fresh out of the Harrison Bakery's oven.

"If you’re in the business of making standard rolls," said Mike Rothfeld, owner of Harrison Bakery, "making donuts is not an easy transition."

Harrison Bakery has provided standard rolls for the Big Kahuna stand at the Fair for a few years already, but they’re adjusting to baking, frying, flipping and most importantly, glazing the new burger's "buns."

The sugar coated donuts are split with a knife, warmed on the grill, and topped with a quarter-pound patty. Jeff Brick, owner of Big Kahuna, will be selling the donut burger at his Big Kahuna stand at the NY State Fair.

"It's definitely a couple napkin sandwich," said Brick.

After taking his first bite today, Mike Rothfeld, the Harrison Bakery owner, said "I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it's actually really good."

The donut burger creators give it two thumbs up for fairgoers looking for a food adventure.
