Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Seven baby ducklings were rescued from a storm drain in Syracuse, Thursday morning. They accidentally slipped through the storm drain while waddling over it.
While the ducks chirped for help, their mother anxiously slowed down traffic in the street. It took a little more than 10 minutes for DPW workers to rescue the ducklings.
“They’re quick they dive but anything for animals,” said DPW worker Jim Kohanski. “Was this your first duck rescue?”, asked NewsChannel 9’s Kim Brown, who was on scene. “Yes. First duck rescue!” Kohanski replied.
After the family was reunited, there was a bigger challenge: Getting them out of the busy west-side neighborhood and into a park near water.
Cheryl Bishop, who lives in the neighborhood, put the ducklings into an animal carrier. It took a while to scoop them all up.
The only bird that wouldn’t budge was the momma duck. She wanted nothing to do with the carrier. Instead, she flew on top of a roof!
Eventually, an animal rehabilitator made it to the scene. She told the DPW workers to carry the ducklings to the park, so the mother duck would follow.
In the end, the ducklings and their mother made it to the woodland reservoir.
