Navarino (WSYR-TV) - They knocked on the door of a family farm in Navarino Thursday night, and asked for a place to pitch their tent. Friday morning, a pair of world-travelers from the Netherlands hit the road again, bound for Los Angeles by bicycle.
Fred Vertuile and Jandirk Vandwout are on a three-month, cross-country trek to see the best of the USA. The two have also cycled through the UK, Australia, Iceland, and other nations.
"We've been friends for at least 20 years; this is our 17 trip. Every summer we spend the whole day on the bike," said Vertuile.
"We try to visit monuments and the national parks here in America so first we go to Niagara Falls, and we will be visiting Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, those kinds of places," said Vandwout.
Before each trip, they have a logo put on a t-shirt to show the route ahead. They say they're thankful for the generosity of families who let them rest for the night, especially when it's too hot to ride.
