Manlius (WSYR-TV) – A 17-year-old East Syracuse Minoa student, and aspiring artist, was hit and killed while riding his bike to summer school Tuesday morning. Now, a community in mourning is bidding a heartfelt goodbye to Austin Elmore.
Elmore died when he was thrown from his bicycle, which was struck while he was riding northbound from Fremont Road and was trying to cross Kirkville Road, according to police.
The school district says Elmore was going to be a senior this fall. He received a Gold Key Award in the 2012 CNY Scholastic Art Awards for a self portrait drawing.
Donna DeSiato, superintendent of the East Syracuse Minoa Central School District, said in a a statement, "The East Syracuse Minoa Central School District mourns the tragic loss of Austin and we extend our deepest, heartfelt sympathy to his family. Austin was a fine young man and a talented artist. Our school community is grieving at this time."
Counseling services will be available to support both students and staff from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. throughout the week at the high school.
The driver of the vehicle, which was traveling eastbound, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital and then released. The driver has not been charged.
Town of Manlius Police are still investigating the accident.
