Welcome to the first weekend of June. It’s hard to believe but we are only two weeks away from the summer solstice. Where did the first part of 2009 go! Anyhow, here are the weather issues that we are up against for this weekend.
There is actually a cold front forecasted by our computer models to move through during the middle of the day Saturday. There are a couple things working against this front producing any showers here in central New York today. First, there is not a lot of moisture for this front to work with. Dew points (the absolute measure of moisture in the air) along the front are in the low 40s this morning and for this time of year that is not very high. Secondly we are not getting much help aloft. There were some showers yesterday with this front over the Great Lakes but that was with the help of a jet stream disturbance. This disturbance will pass well to our north across southern Canada today. The closest any showers will come to us is the St. Lawrence Valley.
Meanwhile, this cold front has stalled to our west over the Midwest and has been the focus of numerous showers and thunderstorms Friday night/Saturday morning. This stalled front will become a warm front later today and slowly approach us tonight and Sunday. We expect lots of clouds Sunday and it will be cooler but I wouldn’t give up on outdoor events just yet. What we’ve seen so far in our data is we should end up dry Sunday morning and any showers may hold off until later in the afternoon. Make sure you tune into Dave Longley later Saturday for more details.
I’m sure a lot of you have questions on when this coolish pattern will come to an end. To be honest, I haven’t looked much beyond the end of next week. I was just a bit too busy the last few days. Hopefully I’ll be able to take some time early next week and shed some light on our mid June weather.
