Fayetteville (WSYR-TV) – A groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday evening marked the start of work to install a new turf field for the Fayetteville-Manlius High School. Instead of the school district turning to taxpayers to fund the improvements, a group of parents set out to raise the money on their own.

The group called the Fayetteville Manlius Community Sports Facility Association aimed to fund the new stadium, track and turf field entirely through private donations. The non-profit organization began raising money after their construction plans were approved by the F-M School Board in December. The FMCSFA says lower than expected material costs and a highly competitive bidding environment reportedly reduced the price estimate of the project from the original $1.8 million. Additionally, several area businesses donated in-kind services.

The field will be closed to the public during construction. It is expected to be complete for the next school year, in time for the fall sports season in September.

Fayetteville (WSYR-TV) - The non-profit organization raising money to provide a new turf field for Fayetteville-Manlius High School now says it is $150,000 short of its goal. The group says it has gathered over $200,000 in new gifts during the past 60 days.

The group, called the Fayetteville Manlius Community Sports Facility Association, wants to fund a new stadium, track and turf field entirely through private donations. The plan is to have the new facility ready for the Fall 2011 sports season.

In addition to the gifts raised during the past two months, the FMCSFA says the original price estimate of $1.8 million was too high. Lower than expected materials costs and a highly competitive bidding environment have reportedly reduced the price of the facility. Additionally, several area businesses are donating in-kind services.

The organization's construction plans were approved by the F-M School Board in December, and now await approval from the State Education Department.

Donations can be made online, or by mail. Checks, made payable to the FMCSFA, can be sent to:

P.O. Box 357,
