Family safe after fire destroys home in Pompey

Pompey (WSYR-TV) - A family safe after a fire destroyed a home in Pompey early Thursday morning.

The home was located along the 6400 hundred block of Kassonta Drive just off of Gates Road in the rural community.

Fire officials say the blaze began around 5:30 a.m. in the garage and spread very quickly to the rest of the structure.

Neighbors told NewsChannel 9 that they heard a "loud boom" and saw flames shooting above the house. They called 911 and fortunately the homeowners had already made it out safely.

Officials say the garage and bedrooms above it were destroyed. Firefighters from more than five departments were able to control the blaze after about two hours.

They are still investigating the cause of the fire.
