Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - From food in their belly to shoes on their feet, some 800 Syracuse families are among the recipients of more than one ton of goods given away Tuesday to those in need.

Peace Incorporated organized the giveaway, which included one item you may not have expected.

It's not often you see Crocs, those lightweight summer shoes, as part of a giveaway for people in need.

But as one of the sponsors of the giveaway, Crocs were among the many items handed out Tuesday morning at Peace Incorporated's Family Resource Center.

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner said, “We have some of the poorest census tracts in the country. This is how we help ourselves, our neighbors, our community. This is part of doing that.”

Peace Incorporated's Sharon Barrett says we're still seeing a growing need. Even with improvement on Wall Street, some people aren't seeing it.

All of the people got two boxes on Tuesday, one with clothes and personal goods, the other with food, including peanut butter and canned carrots.

In all, about 800 people received vouchers for the items, including Pam Damiano who said, “This is awesome, it's a blessing, I just hope and pray that people here, that they really need it and not taking away from those who do.”

A total of 28,000 pounds of goods were handed out to those in need.

The group Feed the Children also took part in the giveaway, handing out food, clothing, diapers, and personal care items to make the warmer weather a bit easier on the feet.
