Auburn (WSYR-TV) – A former Cayuga County Treasurer’s Office employee is facing felony charges after Sheriff’s Investigators say she stole at least $25,000 from property tax collections.
According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, Miriam Knapp, 69, of Cook Road in Venice Center, stole money from the treasurer’s office in 2007 and 2012.
They initially investigated the theft of $17,000 from the office in 2007, but were unable to develop any leads. They launched a second investigation in 2012 after $8,000 in property tax collections were reported stolen.
The leads detectives developed in the 2012 investigation led back to the initial theft reports in 2007.
Knapp was charged with two counts of grand larceny in the third degree and one count of falsifying business records in the first degree. Both charges are felonies.
She was arraigned in Auburn City Court on Tuesday and released on her own recognizance.
