Oswego (WSYR-TV) -- A former Oswego mayor is fighting to lower his status as a sex offender.

John Gosek resigned back in 2005 after the FBI arrested him for soliciting sex from underage girls. Gosek served a 33 month sentence and was released in 2009.

He is currently listed as a Level 2 sex offender, meaning there’s a moderate risk that he would commit a crime again.

If his sex offender status were to be lowered to Level 1, he’d be on the registry for 20 years; Level 2 sex offenders are registered for life.

There is no word on when a decision would be made.
