Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Moments of bravery and courage have earned a major honor for a Fort Drum Soldier.

It was July 2011 when Army Sergeant Jacob Perkins pulled over to help rescue passengers from a fiery bus crash along the Thruway.

Now, Perkins is set to receive the USO Soldier of the Year award next month.

Sgt. Perkins was on his way home to Missouri when he saw the horrific crash, but he wasted no time rushing to the scene and into the midst of chaos where he rescued five people and stayed until everyone was out.
