East Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – This weekend will mark the end of an era in East Syracuse.
The Fremont Bakery, a longtime fixture for cakes and pastries, will be closing its doors for good as the owners are retiring after 50 years in business.
For five decades, Tony Fallico has woken up long before daybreak in order to make sure the store's sweet treats and breads were out before the sun came up.
Now, the end of this week will be his last.
“I have mixed feelings…I can’t go on any longer…I’m going to be 79 years old,” Fallico said.
The time has come for both Tony and his wife Pauline. Competition from big box stores didn’t help them.
For the customers, the moment is bittersweet.
“Best cakes in town…best donuts…just wonderful, wonderful people…wonderful family…they were a real gift to the community,” said longtime customer Dan McCann. “It’s the end of an era…it’s as simple as that.”
Fallico has always appreciated his customers.
“I want to thank all the customers that patronized me for going on 51 years now….without them, it would have never happened,” Fallico said.
Fallico says there has been some interest in his bakery, but no one has stepped up as a buyer. Without a buyer, the Fremont Bakery will be closed for good on Saturday.
