Auburn (WSYR-TV) - People from throughout the US were in Auburn on Thursday to say goodbye to a fallen soldier.
Army Staff Sgt. Francis "Frankie" Phillips was killed this month in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb detonated near his vehicle.
Friends and family gathered at Auburn United Methodist Church on Thursday pay their last respects to the man who gave his life for their country.
“We didn't know he'd be gone so soon but that's the way death is,” said Joseph Phillips, Francis' uncle.
"To a vast majority of Americans the cost of war is equated to the amount of dollars spent or the amount of prestige that's expended, however the real cost of war is before us here today,” said General James Pasquarette, U.S. Army.
On Monday, Phillips will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
