Ft. Drum soldier killed in Afghanistan on Sunday
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A Fort Drum soldier has died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
According to the Department of Defense, 28-year-old Specialist Javier Sanchez Jr. of Greenfield, California was killed Sunday.
The report states that Sanchez was injured after his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device (IED) in Sar Rowzah, Afghanistan while on mounted patrol.
Sanchez joined the army in 2006 and arrived at Fort Drum in 2011.
He was a member of the 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum.
His first deployment sent him to Iraq in 2008 and he left for Afghanistan in January.
Sanchez is survived by his wife, parents and two siblings.
