Fulton (WSYR-TV) - Healthcare in Oswego County entered a new era on Monday morning with the opening of the Fulton Medical Center.

Despite the closure of the community’s hospital 3 year ago  – Lee Memorial – statistics show that Fulton still needs a medical facility.

The urgent-care facility in Fulton drew more than 21,000 patient visits last year alone. In addition to Fulton proper, the facility serves residents in rural communities such as Volney and Granby.

The upgraded facility includes medical imaging equipment for procedures including x-rays, mammograms, CTs, and ultrasounds. The facility also features outpatient services, as well as a private women’s health suite.

The marketing staff at the hospital says 85 percent of all urgent-care patients are treated within two hours and typically costs less than at an emergency room.

The facility has received $22 million in state grants to make the necessary improvements. Oswego Health, which runs Fulton Medical, is also working to open a smaller medical center in Central Square, with an anticipated opening date of September of 2012.
