Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - For more than 13 years, some of the most expensive cars to hit the road have been made in Onondaga County.
If you’re an automotive aficionado, you’ve likely heard the name Zimmer – a brand that’s attracted attention from the world’s wealthiest car enthusiasts.
But there’s no guarantee that the name will stay in Central New York.
The Zimmer has been built at Sam’s Auto Body since 1999.
The classic car that looks like it would be at home in a set from The Great Gatsby is sold across the country and around the world – it’s sold to princes in Kuwait and businessmen in Jordan.
About 30 years ago, Zimmer Motor Cars went out of business in Florida.
Intrigued by the name, former Syracuse New Times owner Art Zimmer bought the business in the mid 1990s.
About 45 of the neo-classic cars have been built in Central New York to date .
But Art recently sold the company to a businessman in New Jersey.
The question that remains now, is will these unique cars continue to be built here? The new owner in New Jersey, Eran Heyman, told NewsChannel 9 that the company in the research phase as they move the business forward, so he couldn't commit either way. So, this may be the last Zimmer to roll out of Central New York.
