LIVERPOOL, NY (WSYR-TV) - Angel, the area's first diabetic service dog, met her new owner on Saturday, 6-year-old Emma Louise of Liverpool.

Angel was trained to alert the family when Emma has high or low blood-sugar. Emma's mother said the dog can smell it.

"If Emma is having a high blood sugar, she'll give off a sweet scent. If her blood sugar's low she'll give off like a sour scent," said Emma's mother Kelly Badgley.

"We can sleep a little more soundly because she'll be trained to wake us up if something were to happen or to wake up Emma if she reaches those critical points," said Emma's father Allan Louise.

Eventually, Angel will be trained to call 911 with a special phone pad in case of an emergency.

"She'll be able to hit that pad and a recording will come out and they'll dispatch to our home immediately," said Badgley.

Angel was trained by Warren Retreivers. Badgley found the group through Facebook.

A big fundraising effort by the community soon followed, to help bring Angel to Liverpool.
