GEDDES, NY (WSYR-TV) - The annual Great American Spam Championship was held at the New York State Fair on Sunday. Contestants made everything from Spam sandwiches and Spam hamburgers to Spam pizza, meatballs and Eggs Benedict.

Spam is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year.

Spam has long been a household name in America, especially after playing a role in WWII.

"During WWII it was what kept the troops going on board ship as they were going overseas because they couldn't carry fresh meat and have it last,” said NYS Fair Culinary Superintendent Linda Jackson.

The Spam creations were judged on taste, creativity and presentation.

The winners in the youth and adult competitions win $150 and will go on to the national competition.
