It’s amazing how quickly the foliage can come out this time of year over central New York. Of course our 80 degree weather a week ago really helped us along. In spite of all the green we are hurting a bit for rain. Since April 6
th we’ve had less than an inch (.90”). That’s about a third of what we normally can expect over that time. It’s not a big concern yet.
The latest drought statement from the US Agriculture Department has much of southeast New York and Pennsylvania is ‘abnormally dry.’ How about our chances for rain this week?
There is a stalled front down over the southern part of the United States. This has been a very active boundary with dozens of reports of severe weather during the weekend. Although clouds along this front are already streaming north into central New York Monday we think the rain stays to our south. However, low pressure will spin up along this front today and sneaks up into southern New England. Counter-clockwise winds around this low should bring at least some rain our way for Tuesday. There is still some question as to whether it will be a few showers or steady rain but be in the mind frame for some wet weather from midday Tuesday into the afternoon.
We get a break Wednesday but the main branch of the jet stream is cutting right across the middle of the country (west to east) and should bring a few systems into the East during Thursday through Saturday. That’s why we’ve got showers in the forecast during that time frame. We have thunder in for Thursday but that really depends on the track of low pressure and there are some disagreements with our computer models. We’ll have more as we head through the week.
