Groups call for oversight to protect inmates
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Two groups are calling for action, following the deaths of two inmates in the Onondaga County Justice Center.
The Answer Coalition and United as One Coalition want the legislature to create an independent oversight mechanism to protect inmates. After the deaths of Raul Pinet Jr. and Chuniece Patterson, the groups argue nothing was ever changed to prevent such instances.
Following Pinet’s death, a grand jury called for a new commission to review protocol at the jail, as well as more training for deputies and a better video system.
