ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Thousands of gun rights advocates rallied at the New York State Capitol on Saturday to protest new state and federal gun control efforts in the wake of the school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The demonstration was just one of dozens going on across the country as part of the Guns Across America rally.

New York this week passed the nation's toughest laws on assault weapons and magazine restrictions.

The National Rifle Association has criticized the secretive negotiations and fast-track passage of the new law.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said lawmakers moved fast to forestall a potential buying spree of now-outlawed guns.
