Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – A local head-shop chain has been ordered to remove mislabeled products from its shelves and it will receive a heavy fine.
According to the Attorney General’s office, Twisted Headz will need to remove synthetic drugs and similar products from its shelves and former owner Gary Schiffer must pay $27,000 in penalties.
As part of an undercover investigation, agents were sent into a Twisted Headz store on Syracuse’s North Side, where they purchased items with names like Permagrin and White Rhino.
Although the substances were called potpourri and labeled “Not Meant for Human Consumption,” the clerk proceeded to recommend a pipe that would maximize the effect of smoking the substances.
According to New York State law, items must be clearly identified by their packaging. Although many of the items found in head shops have been marketed as window cleaner or potpourri, or other products, investigators say they have been sold with the clerk offering advice on how ingest them.
Synthetic drugs have been linked to numerous bizarre events in Central New York and beyond.
Over the summer, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed 12 lawsuits against 16 head shops, including Twisted Headz.
