Marcellus (WSYR-TV) -- Caution is something teenagers are not known for. The part of the brain that controls impulsive behavior hasn't fully developed. Get a group of teens together and risky behavior goes way up. But what happens when a group decides not to take risks? A program using high school athletes as an example aims at answering just that.
As multi-sports athletes, Dani Felty and Matthew Tice have a lot on their plates, and the T-shirts they wear are a sign of an extra challenge in their senior year. They're leaders for a program called "Honor the Code." Marcellus is one of four local high schools where student athletes have signed up to honor the athletic code by staying away from alcohol and other drugs – and it's not easy.
The program, which is run by the Prevention Network, is trying a new approach to changing minds. It appeals to the athletes pride in their performance. They learn that just one night of heavy drinking can wipe out two weeks of training and doubles their risk of getting injured.
Dani and Matthew don't doubt that at all. They say when one of their teammates has been partying it shows.
Dr. Bright says it's important for parents to support programs like "Honor the Code" and not just assume that drinking is a part of life for all high school students. "Honor the Code" hopes to expand to other high schools next year.
