JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (AP) - A demolition crew has begun tearing down one of the last remnants of the Binghamton area's once-thriving shoe manufacturing industry.
The
Press and Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton reports that the former Endicott Johnson Shoe Corp. factory in Johnson City will be torn down over the next month and the debris removed from the site.
The 450-foot-long building is one of four mammoth Endicott Johnson factories in the center of Johnson City, a village just west of Binghamton.
The property is owned by Indian Valley Industries, which manufactures environmental remediation products. Company officials say the old shoe factory building had become obsolete for their operations.
Endicott Johnson was a leading footwear manufacturing company for much of the 20th century, employing thousands of workers in the Binghamton area. The company's last local factory closed more than a decade ago.
