Liverpool, New York (WSYR-TV) - Hundreds of turned out to Onondaga Lake Park's Willow Bay Sunday morning, braving the chilly weather and lacing up their sneakers for the 2nd annual "Hope for Heather" Run/Walk.
The event is put on by the family of Heather Weeks, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer, at the young age of 24. Her mother says events like this one are important because education and awareness need to be raised about the disease, often considered a silent killer.
Frieda Weeks says "Ovarian cancer is the fifth killer of women as far as gynecological cancers. It's one of the most deadly. When a woman goes for her yearly checkup, it's not detected, so we need to raise money for research and make women be proactive about their body and know the warning signs."
Weeks says 500 people pre-registered for the run and walk, but 700 showed up.
