Constantia (WSYR-TV) - Firefighters are warning folks -- depending on where you are, the ice on Oneida Lake isn't thick enough to travel on.
In Constantia, rescuers have had to help seven people off the ice since this past weekend.
The ice on the southern shore is a lot thicker than the northern end and that’s where most of the ice rescues have been.
With so many incidents lately, firefighter Chad Whitney knew his crew needed a refresher on what goes into an ice rescue.
“Typically we'll be out on the ice a half dozen times this winter and this week we've already been out three times," said Whitney
One of the biggest reasons they've been out so much is because the ice isn't as safe further north.
The fire department says the ice hasn't had a chance to thicken since we've been getting constant snowfall for the past couple of days, so people should be really careful when venturing out on the lake.
They suggest cutting into the ice and checking its thickness every couple of steps.
