Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Icicles hanging from a home are often a sign of a bigger problem. Chip Van Derhoof, with Van Derhoof Roofing Company, says icy buildup can put stress on the roof of your home and can even rip down gutters – and that’s just the damage outside.
The company knocks down dozens of icicles hanging from old homes during the winter months. And this year’s winter freeze has been keeping their crews busy. They responded to 10 calls alone on Thursday.
“Unfortunately, where we live, we’re always going to have ice in Syracuse, but you can eliminate that by making sure your house is properly ventilated and insulated,” said Chip Van Derhoof.
When Central New York warms up, it can get even worse.
"It’s cold out now, but we're supposed to get some warmer weather, that's going to allow the ice to back up and possibly on some of the older roofs to dam, and leak into the houses,” Van Derhoof continued.
Of course, not only do icicles damage your home, but danger to property and people are also common.
The Van Derhoof Roofing Company hears of stories every year of icicles falling on cars and breaking windows and some of them are heavy enough to cause serious injury, especially if you’re trying to remove them yourself.
