Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Members of Central New York faith communities are taking the challenge of living off of a food-stamps budget for one week.

The Hunger Project at InterFaith Works has people buying groceries for one week for less than $34, which breaks down to under $5 a day.

“It’s not too difficult to fill your belly with $33.50, but to get nutritious, healthy meals is really very difficult,” said Rev. William Redfield of Trinity Episcopal Church. “And so, as a result, we have become sensitive to how many people in our culture have to live.”

Participants met on Wednesday to mark the midway point of the Hunger Project.

They discussed the struggles they’re facing and how it’s impacting their lives.
