Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Is your iPhone following your every move? Did you know an iOS 6 feature tracks what you do on your phone for advertisers so they can tailor ads to you?
It’s true, but there are ways to stop it from happening.
As Hailey Temple browses through the apps on her iPhone an add pops up for an airline and it may be specifically targeting her.
“Instead of getting flooded with all these messages you're not interested in it's catered to what you may want,” said Temple.
That’s because the new iPhone, or if you’ve upgraded the software on your old one, has a feature that clues advertisers in on what you’re doing on your cell phone. Advertisers can then use that data to show you products you may be interested in.
"I don't think there is a big reason to be alarmed about it. Apple says it's using a tracking number that does not identify you as a person and as along as Apple stays trustworthy on that practice there isn't much to worry about,” said Anthony Rotolo with Syracuse University’s iSchool.
Anyone can change the settings on their iPhone with just a few taps, but you need to know where to go to turn off the feature. You can find it by tapping on SETTINGS, then scroll down to GENERAL, tap ABOUT, then ADVERTISING. Finally, switch the "Limit Ad Tracking" to ON.
"I think a lot of times people feel technology is taking over and I think that's scary for some people who don't use technology,” said Temple.
"I'm okay with it for now. If the ads start getting too close for comfort I might consider turning it off, but for now it's useful,” said iPhone user Chelsea Orcutt.
It’s important to note that the tracking system is automatically turned on, unless you go into your settings to turn it off. You can find additional information on the feature on the advertising page in your iPhone settings.
