Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Italian Chef Lidia Bastianich of “Lidia’s Italy” stopped by Justin’s Tuscan Grill on Friday.

The chef was in town for a sold-out fundraiser dinner where guests got the chance to enjoy a four-course dinner made by Lidia, as well as chat with her about her new book.

NewsChannel 9 wanted to know, when making sauce, is it okay to use canned tomatoes? She said yes, but insists you use San Marzano whole or plum tomatoes.

“When you put a little bit of garlic, good olive oil, crush them with your hands, the San Marzano tomatoes, give it one boil, fresh garlic and you got the best sauce,” Bastianich said.

Wild mushroom soup, chicken with olives and pine nuts and limoncello tiramisu was on the menu Friday night. Lidia’s Italy airs on Saturdays on WCNY.
